Amendments to Asylum and Immigration Bill

"The amendments will:

- enable appeals against deprivation of British nationality and appeals against removal or deportation proceedings of former citizens to be heard together, which, in appropriate cases, such as those involving conduct seriously prejudicial to the vital interests of the UK, will speed up the process of depriving citizens of their British nationality and removing them from the UK;

- replace the current system of back payments of income support to refugees with a loan system which would be forward looking and designed to assist integration;

- make community work an obligation for failed asylum seekers who [cannot] return home;

- restrict access to social housing for those given permission to stay only in the areas where they have been dispersed. This will relieve pressure on London and the South East;

- require non-EEA foreign nationals to demonstrate they have entered the UK lawfully (and have permission to be here) before giving notice of an intended marriage at a designated registry office; and

- remove appeal rights in non-asylum cases when a person is refused entry to the UK because they fail to meet certain pre-determined mandatory requirements, for example, attempted entry as a student when they do not have a place at their stated college.

A technical amendment clarifies the processing of late representations and any fresh grounds for asylum claims under the one stop appeals system."

CRE calls on Britain to put up the 'no racist need apply' sign for local and European elections

http://www.cre.gov.uk/media/nr_arch/2004/nr040604.html

Stop the BNP

Ken Livingstone, the TUC, NUS, MPs and anti-fascist campaigners today urged all

those opposed to the British National Party (BNP) to use their vote.

Unite Against Fascism is calling for a high turnout to defeat the BNP at the

ballot box this Thursday. Campaigners are concerned that a low turnout on

Thursday could allow the BNP to sneak a London Assembly Member or a seat on the

European Parliament.

Ken Livingstone, Unite Against Fascism Chair said:

"On June 10 voter apathy could be the BNP's strongest weapon. People won't

forgive themselves if they don't vote and then the BNP get elected. The polls

show the BNP inching towards at least one seat on the London Assembly. Only by

voting against them will Londoners stop a fascist victory on the Assembly. The

vast majority of people in London oppose the BNP - the BNP can only be defeated

if the majority of Londoners who hate racism and fascism turn out to vote on

Thursday."

Brendan Barber, TUC General Secretary said:

"The far right will only win in London if Londoners don't vote. Staying at home

on Thursday could do great damage to this great city."

Mandy Telford, NUS President said:

"The BNP are still a tiny minority party. However, if we fail to vote on

Thursday then there is the danger the BNP will slip into office and have a

platform to spread their racist hate-filled messages. We must stop that

happening and I urge all students to use their vote on Thursday to stop the

BNP."

Barbara Follett MP said:

"Respect your country - vote against the BNP. "

Diane Abbott MP said:

"I urge all Londoners to vote on Thursday. Not only to show that the BNP's

support is in fact a tiny percentage, but more importantly to have their say on

the policies that will effect them for the next four years."

Claude Moraes MEP said:

"It is absolutely vital for the majority of decent people to get out and use

their vote. We cannot allow a low turnout on Thursday. Voting will stop the BNP

- a fascist organisation full of people with criminal thugs - to represent us on

the European Parliament or any other institution in Britain."
