Attempts to prevent human trafficking are making conditions worse for voluntary migrants
"We do not dispute that in both settings migrants have suffered hardship and abuse, but current anti-trafficking approaches do not help their problems," they write. These studies show that a more flexible and realistic approach to labour migration among young people is required, they conclude.

War of words over asylum seekers
June 5, 2004 - 10:30PM
A row over the media's use of the term "illegal immigrants" to describe asylum seekers will go before the Australian Press Council this week.
Central Coast woman Mira Wroblewski has lodged the complaint, which the council will hear on Wednesday.
She said a large number of refugee groups and individuals supported her action.
The complaint was against The Sydney Morning Herald's use of the terms "illegal immigrants" and "illegal entrants" when publishing articles on asylum seekers.
But Ms Wroblewski hoped the action would force the council to formulate guidelines to restrict the use of the terms in all media outlets.
"The complaint is based on the fact that asylum-seekers are not illegal," Ms Wroblewski said in a statement.
"Seeking asylum, or refuge, in Australia is legal under both international and domestic law.
"Australia is a signatory to both the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Convention on Refugees.
"Australia's Migration Act brings this into domestic law.
"This means that Australia has undertaken to accept asylum-seekers and process their claims."
Ms Wroblewski became involved in refugee support work after visiting Woomera Detention Centre for the first time in 2002.
"I could not believe how innocent people are being treated in my country," she said.
"They are not criminals, they have done nothing illegal. Despite this, they are treated worse than people who have done something illegal.
She said the federal government used the term "illegal" to vilify asylum seekers and justify their treatment.
"I believe that the media should use the more accurate and respectful terms `asylum-seekers' or `refugees' to describe people who come to seek our help," Ms Wroblewski said.
