Concerning Runnymede Trust report: 'The Commission on the Future of Multi-Ethnic Britain' - "How a state sees and controls the borders between itself and others is of paramount importance. Therefore the report looks also at immigration and asylum policy."
http://www.runnymedetrust.org/projects/meb/reportIntroduction.html
With the launch of the new Commission on British Muslims and Islamophobia revised report: 'Islamophobia - issues, challenges and action'
"Islamophobia is exacerbated by a number of contextual factors. One of these is the fact that a high proportion of refugees and people seeking asylum are Muslims. Demonisation of refugees by the tabloid press is therefore frequently a coded attack on Muslims, for the words ‘Muslim’, ‘asylum-seeker’, ‘refugee’ and ‘immigrant’ become synonymous and interchangeable with each other in the popular imagination.

Open Meeting: Scotland's Declining Population

Tuesday 22 June 2004, 10.30 am – 12.30 pm
Guest speaker: Professor Robert Wright (Stirling University)
at Positive Action in Housing, Glasgow
Unions Work for Refugees and Asylum Seekers
Friday 4 June 2004, 10am - 4pm
A conference on trade unions’ role in integrating refugees
and asylum seekers into the working environment.
STUC Centre,
333 Woodlands Road, Glasgow
There are currently 11,000 asylum seekers and refugees
resident in Glasgow. Despite the fact that they possess many
of the skills which are needed in our economy they are still
six times as likely to be unemployed. With 75% of all
asylum applications receiving positive decisions this potential
workforce offers a solution to skills shortages facing
Scotland today.
This conference will look at some of the challenges facing
refugees and asylum seekers as they prepare to integrate into
the working environment, and will focus on the role that
trade unions can play in supporting this process.
The conference is aimed at: Union activists, Shop Stewards,
Branch Secretaries, Full Time Officials, Senior Union
Officers, and is free to union members. It is an interactive
conference to debate how your union can engage in
initiatives to integrate refugees and asylum seekers into the
working environment.
Lunch and refreshments provided.
